Map: How to get to the south

The Allgäu is often referred to as a region, even though it cannot actually be defined geographically.
However, it can be said that the Allgäu consists of the southernmost end of the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia.
Every year, numerous tourists from all over the world come to the Allgäu to spend a few days close to nature.

Bucket list: Things to do & sights in the Allgäu

When you think of the Allgäu, you probably think of green meadows, mighty mountains and the Alps.
But the popular vacation region in the south has much more to offer!
From hikes, wellness offers, bike tours, culture and art to winter sports, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone here.
What you should do in the Allgäu:

  • Hike through the mountains
  • Cycle tour along the green meadows
  • City trip through Kempten
  • Swimming in one of the picturesque lakes
  • Excursion to Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Skiing and winter camping in Oberstdorf
  • Wellness offers and spa

My recommended cities as a simple route:

Oberstdorf: Recreation & vacation in winter

Oberstdorf is located in the Oberallgäu region and is considered a spa and Kneipp health resort, which is why it is visited by many tourists every year who want to completely switch off and relax.
However, not only spa and wellness offers await you here, but also other scenic highlights such as the Breitachklamm gorge, Freibergsee lake or the Riedberger and Rubihorn mountains.
However, holidaymakers also particularly enjoy coming here in winter, as Oberstdorf is a paradise for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding, as well as winter camping.
Equipped with a heater, electric blanket and, if necessary, a seat heater, you don’t have to worry about freezing even when camping with a roof tent.
Read everything you need to know about winter camping with a roof tent here: Rooftop tent in winter.
The highlights in Oberstdorf:

  • Wellness, relaxation and spa
  • Winter sports activities (skiing etc.)

Kempten: Historical highlights, leisure activities & sights

When visiting the Allgäu, you should also definitely go to Kempten.
The independent city has around 70,000 inhabitants and an area of 63.29 km².
Kempten is considered a student town and therefore offers many opportunities to go out and have fun.
But at the same time, you can also go for a great walk, explore the area with an ice cream in your hand or browse the stores.
For those interested in history, there are, for example, the state rooms of the Kempten Residence, the Basilica of St. Lawrence Church or the Kempten Museum in the Zumsteinhaus to visit.
The Cambodunum Archaeological Park, an excavation site, should also definitely be on your to-do list.
The highlights in Kempten:

  • Stroll through the city
  • Exploring the area and going out
  • State rooms of the Kempten Residence
  • Basilica of St. Lawrence Church
  • Kempten Museum in the Zumsteinhaus
  • Cambodunum Archaeological Park (excavation site)

Füssen: Lake Hopfensee, Neuschwanstein Castle & museums

Füssen borders Austria to the south and therefore almost invites you to take a walk there.
The vacation resort also boasts numerous historical museums, one of which is located in the Benedictine monastery of St. Mang.
History and culture enthusiasts will get their money’s worth here, as the history of lute and violin making in Füssen is on display.
However, a very special highlight and probably the town’s trademark is the romantic Neuschwanstein Castle or Hohenschwangau Castle.
These are best combined with a hike on a day trip to admire the beautiful surrounding areas.
The picturesque Hopfensee lake, a summer toboggan run and a cable car with amazing panoramic views also await you.
The highlights in Füssen:

  • Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Hohenschwangau Castle
  • Hopfensee
  • Alpsee
  • Historical museums & Benedictine monastery of St. Mang

Nature camping instead of a vacation apartment or hotel

If you want to fully enjoy nature in the Allgäu, you should definitely go camping.
This will allow you to completely switch off from work and the daily grind and enjoy the peace and quiet in a relaxed atmosphere.
With a roof tent or tent trailer, you also have a comfortable place to sleep and for other uses anytime and anywhere.
The whole thing can be set up in just a few minutes and without any effort.
This means you can travel spontaneously and flexibly, take breaks whenever you want and enjoy quality time with your loved ones.
Whether as a couple or a family – there are numerous models in different sizes and designs, so there’s something for everyone!

For maximum comfort and luxury, you can purchase a camping kitchen and camping furniture.
A cool drink or two, the starry sky above you and possibly even a campfire in your midst – camping offers all of this.
All the advantages of camping:

  • Spontaneous daily planning
  • Breaks are possible anytime and anywhere

Material and processing.
The tent fabric of our trailer tents is made from a high-quality, 450 g blended fabric, also known as canvas. This unique combination of cotton and polyester combines the advantages of a natural fiber with those of a modern high-tech material. The result is a robust, breathable fabric that impresses with its pleasant feel and high dimensional stability.

The tent fabric, which is also used by the military, is impregnated and particularly tear-resistant thanks to the ripstop process. In this special weaving technique, thicker threads are woven into the fabric at intervals of around 10-15 millimetres, giving the fabric its characteristic tiled structure and exceptional tear resistance. It goes without saying that our fabrics are opaque and therefore offer optimum protection and privacy.
The basis of our trailer tents is a robust stainless steel frame with a thickness of 3×3 cm. A 1.8 cm thick, water-resistant wooden floor panel is securely fastened to this sturdy frame with stainless steel screws. The frame of the trailer tents is also made of galvanized steel tubing and special stainless steel components that ensure maximum stability. The modern surface finish not only offers a high level of corrosion protection, but also gives the material a pleasant feel and ensures a durable, weatherproof construction.
We rely exclusively on yarn from the German market leader Amann. Thanks to the combination of a cotton core and a high-tenacity polyester core, this yarn is characterized by a particularly high tensile strength and excellent water resistance.

On contact with water, the cotton coating swells and closes the seam holes created during sewing. For additional protection, all seams in the roof area are fitted with a transparent sealing strip to ensure maximum waterproofness.
Less is sometimes more.
We are often asked: What about the water column? For tent fabrics, the impermeability of the fabric is specified in the form of the water column. For cotton tents, this value is usually around 300 to 400 mm. However, our tent fabric offers an exceptionally high water column for cotton fabric of around 750 mm. This means that theoretically more than 75 cm of water can stand on the material before the first drops penetrate.

A major advantage of cotton as a natural raw material is its ability to swell when it gets damp, which provides additional waterproofing. In contrast, synthetic fabrics, which cannot swell, must have a much higher water column (between 3,000 and 10,000 mm, depending on the material) in order to achieve comparable waterproofness.
