Written by Carlo and Maaike from travel blog Waanzinnige Wereld During our vacation in Croatia we got to test this cool iKamper Skycamp Mini rooftent.
In this blog we share our experiences of camping with a rooftop tent. [lwptoc]
Camping Ratgeber:
Why a rooftop tent?
The feel of an RV, but the convenience of a car.
That is exactly how we have experienced camping with a rooftop tent.
We like being able to leave at our destination whenever we want.
At the same time, we also want the comfort of a normal bed and sturdy tent.
Now Croatia was the perfect country to test this, also because it can suddenly start raining and blowing.
In addition, the distances between sights are sometimes long and then it is nice to be able to take your car.
Convenience
In terms of convenience and speed, this rooftop tent gets a big 10 as far as we are concerned.
The tent is folded and unfolded within 5 minutes.
In the beginning you may have to fiddle with the strings for example, but the more you do it, the easier it is to fold and unfold.
We also brought an awning that we could put up to stay dry during a rainstorm, or just to create shade.
We didn’t use the awning that much.
But when we did decide to put it up, it took us about 15 minutes.
You get the hang of it!
The only point of criticism about the awning is that when you want to take the car out, you have to pack it up.
So that takes some extra time and effort.
When it’s 35 degrees you don’t feel like doing that.
So think carefully about how your vacation is going to look, so that you know in advance whether you should buy an awning or not.
Comfort
We are critical sleepers, but in terms of sleeping comfort this rooftop tent is also highly recommended.
If you find the mat of the roof tent a little too thin, you can choose to purchase a top mattress.
At night it is nice and dark in the tent, but you can also unzip the roof window for a little more light and to be able to look at the stars romantically together.
Very nice!
By the way, the fact that the tent is on the car has a big advantage; it is much less cold than if you sleep on the ground.
Especially when you go camping in the late season, this can be a big advantage over a regular tent.
We were often asked how we felt about having to climb the stairs in and out of the tent.
Some may resent the steps in the morning.
The first few mornings you may be a little stiff, but you get used to it.
The steps are very sturdy and well adjustable.
So no worries!
Recommended
Especially if you are really an outdoor or itinerant camper, then this tent is perfect.
You live outside a lot and can go wherever and whenever you want.
Parking garages are a challenge though, keep that in mind!
We had the rooftop tent on a van, which makes it a lot higher than a car.
Because of the rooftop tent we could not enter many parking garages.
But if you are a real camper, of course your car is at the campsite and not in the parking garage 😉 We found the iKamper Skycamp Mini rooftop tent to be of very good quality.
Everything has been thought of and that still makes the experience of camping with a rooftop tent a very comfortable one.
For those still in doubt, ask if you can rent the rooftop tent before you buy it.
Our conclusion: This Skycamp Mini rooftop tent will not disappoint you!
Enjoy your vacation.
