As you can see above, Liguria is located directly by the sea, which is why many of the towns are ideal for a beach vacation or other water sports.
Away from the beach, the region offers many trails for hiking and motorcycling.

Monte Rosso al Mare: Public beach with promenade

We start with Monte Rosso al Mare.
This picturesque village has a ferry port that you can use to visit other places in Liguria.
But Monte Rosso is also worth a visit in its own right.
Especially the beach!
This sandy beach in the east of Liguria runs along the entire town.
The Fegina promenade is also right on the beach.
This offers you small, colorful souvenir stores, restaurants and a shady avenue.

Cinque Terre: tour through five picturesque coastal villages

The Cinque Terre is a national park made up of five villages in Liguria.
These include Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monte Rosso al Mare.
All three are characterized by their characteristic, colourful houses right by the sea.
Many of the towns offer historic buildings and old castles on the slopes of the rocky surroundings.
For adventurers outside the cities, there is a colorful variety to experience, as the region has been declared a nature reserve.
There are routes and paths for hiking through this untouched and unique nature, offering panoramic views of the sea between the villages.
You can see more of the sea if you take a round trip on the ferry.

The Bracco Pass is made up of rocky shores, 600 meters above sea level.
This gives you a fantastic view over the blue waters.
The numerous roads and paths along the pass make it a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and motorcyclists alike.
There are also small cafés along the more developed roads, which are ideal for a short break with a picturesque view.

Further northwest, on the coastline, there is a larger city that is ideal for day trips: Genoa.

City of Genoa: visit to the capital with museums in the rain

Genoa is the capital of Liguria and one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.
This is not only due to the old harbor with its historic buildings and ships, but also the narrow streets of the old town between the stately houses.
For rainy days, you will also find a museum and an aquarium here.
There is also the children’s paradise Città dei Bambini, which explains the marine environment and some of the technical requirements of seafaring even to the youngest children in bad weather.
A visit to the famous Genoa lighthouse is also worthwhile.

Savona is located on a flat plain in western Liguria.
The city is best known for its arcades and romantic little squares in the old town.
There are also numerous historical buildings, such as a cathedral and a Sistine Chapel, similar to the one in Rome.
The city also has numerous beaches, known as Zinola, Fornaci, the waterfront promenade and Natarella.
For the more adventurous, hiking through the surrounding nature reserves with bubbling streams, green fields and fishing opportunities is recommended.
This is what the city of Savona can offer you:

The last stop worth seeing on our journey through Liguria is the coastal town of Sanremo, just before the border with France.

Sanremo: more beaches, cultural experiences & hiking

To top it all off, Sanremo offers you long beaches with a mild climate, connected to a medieval old town.
But it’s by no means unfashionable here!
For the adults among you, a visit to Liguria’s world-famous casino is well worthwhile.
Otherwise, it’s worth enjoying the city’s cultural mix, which has been created by the many different tourists.
The best way to do this is at one of the numerous music and street food events or outdoor cinemas.
But you will also find hiking trails in Sanremo.
The ones in Molini di Prelà are particularly beautiful.
It takes about three quarters of an hour to get there by car.
These things await you in Sanremo:

  • Long sandy beaches with a mild climate
  • Historic old town & famous casino
  • Cultural mix through tourists from all over the world
  • Music, streetfood events & outdoor cinemas

Known for its leaning tower, the city in Tuscany is a popular excursion destination.
The city’s white marble buildings are rich in history and culture.
The cathedral square in particular, where the famous bell tower stands, is absolutely worth seeing.
You can also stroll through the city along the city walls and the River Arno.
It is also worth exploring the city center with its colourful little houses on your excursion.

Whether you want to explore the coast by motorboat, hike over the rocky mountain passes of the coast or cast a line in Savona and the surrounding area, you’ll find lots of tips for great vacation activities here.

Motor boating: Adventure on the coast

Gliding over the sparkling water, spraying foam along the picturesque coasts, what a dream!
You can experience exactly that with a motorboat.
You can hire boats all along the coast.
Please note: If you want to take a motorboat out on the water in Italy, you must apply for an international boating license (IBS)!
Unfortunately, a recreational boating license is not enough.

Fishing is a popular vacation activity in Liguria, especially among campers.
Hobby anglers cast their hand-held fishing rods along the coast or take a motorboat out to sea.
The area around Savona is particularly popular.
If you want to go fishing in Italy, you need to buy a fishing license.
You can usually find these at petrol stations, sports stores and specialist stores.
It is also best to enquire there about the local regulations for the water.

Hiking through coasts, rustic landscape & forests

Over old hiking trails along steep slopes, through forests and through a picturesque landscape – this is how hiking in Liguria can be described.
It is not uncommon for the view on your hikes through Liguria to extend as far as the sea.
The Cinque Terre is even Italy’s most popular hiking area, but extensive hikes over the Bracco Pass, around Savona and Sanremo are also worthwhile.

Weather: Sunny with little rain

The best time to visit is in August with an average temperature of 27 °C.
Temperatures rarely rise above 30 °C here, but this is what makes hiking and other sporting activities in the region so popular.
