Camping packing list: Everything for a carefree camping vacation
Camping is the best way to experience the feeling of complete freedom and closeness to nature.
So it’s not without reason that there are 15 million campers in Germany!
Exciting excursions, idyllic landscapes and quality time with your loved ones are just some of the things that make camping so special.
That’s why you should have everything you need to make your time in the great outdoors as carefree and relaxed as possible.
A packing list is essential for structuring and planning your trip – especially when camping!
Because if you forget something from home, you can’t just ask at reception.
Campers in the countryside also have a longer walk to the nearest supermarket.
As always, documents and papers should be at the top of the list.
Kitchen utensils are also essential, as you usually have to cater for yourself on the campsite. So what should you not forget when camping?
Here is a summary of the most important things:
- Documents and papers
- Outdoor clothing
- Camping furniture
- Cooking utensils
- Sanitary accessories and emergency kit
Are you a camping beginner? Read all about the basics of routes, costs, tips etc. here: Camping beginners. Here is a detailed packing list of accessories for a successful and carefree camping vacation:
Documents: Identity cards, papers & finances
First of all, you should have all the important documents and papers with you!
Very important: Identification is compulsory in Germany.
Anyone leaving Germany must have an identity card or passport with them.
If you are traveling with children, remember to bring their ID cards.
Also important are your health insurance card, debit card, cash and the most important documents relating to your booking.
You should think about this before you start your trip:

(Outdoor) clothing: robust and weatherproof
Of course, when camping, you spend most of your time in nature and in the open air.
Whether it’s a short hiking trip or a longer tour – there can be significant temperature differences at any time.
To make sure you are prepared for everything on your trip, you should get the right outdoor clothing to start with.
A suitable weatherproof jacket and trousers are particularly important if you want to enjoy a relaxed but eventful vacation.
No matter what time of year – you should always have a suitable jacket and trousers with you to protect you from rain, wind and cold.
In addition, a vacation outdoors, especially near wooded areas, has a small disadvantage: mosquitoes.
So when buying your outdoor clothing, make sure that the material is mosquito-proof and that they can’t bite through it!
You should think about the following clothing:
- Outdoor jacket
- Rain jacket / rain cape
- Outdoor pants / trekking pants
- Hiking / functional socks
- Sturdy shoes
- Swimsuit
- Fleece sweater/jacket
- Functional underwear
- Pants / Shorts / Jeans
- Cap / Caps / Hats
- T-shirts
- Shirt/blouse (mosquito-proof if necessary)
- Pajamas / Pyjamas
- Socks
With the right clothing, you can enjoy your camping vacation in any weather! Where do I sleep, what do I need for the trip and where do I spend my time on the campsite?
The basics: different types of tents
One of the first important decisions before your trip: How do I actually want to sleep on the campsite?
Whether you want to travel with a camper, in a roof tent or in a classic tent – an additional awning is of course practical to make your time on the campsite a little more varied.
Tents: inflatable, tarp & awning
Whether in addition to your roof tent, for hiking or as a main sleeping area – here you will find a list of different tents to help you find the right option for you.
2-person tents are suitable for short trips, while a rear tent, trailer tent or awning, for example, is useful as an extended area in addition to the camper or roof tent.
So if the space in your camper allows it, be sure to pack an awning too.
You can find a list of different types of tent here:
- Extension tent – even more space for any number of uses
- Inflatable tent – set up in a few seconds and without much work
- Bivouac tent – For short, weather-related breaks along the way
- Folding caravan – comfortable living space in addition to the car
- Family tent – Sufficient space for the whole family
- Ridge tent – bright and open, in Indian style
- Geo-etched – also holds on rocky ground, steep slopes or densely overgrown sections
- Rear tent – additional usable and living area for your camper
- Dome tent – Small space requirement and quick and easy set-up
- Pyramid tent – Extremely stable and withstands even strong winds
- Tarp tent – As a shelter for in between
- Trekking tent – Extremely compact (suitable for excursions)
- Tunnel tent – plenty of space, often even standing height
- Awning – Expandable space on the campsite
- Throw tent – quick set-up and compact pack size
Tip!
Roof tent for more comfort and luxury
Although a tent is a good solution for a short trip or in between, it is not the best option in the long term.
A roof tent is therefore the perfect solution for sleeping even more comfortably and easily, allowing you to enjoy your time on the road even more.
The roof tent is simply mounted on your vehicle and is practically ready to sleep in after long, eventful days.
All you have to do is unfold the tent with one hand movement and climb up.
With an integrated mattress and comfortable living space, a rooftop tent guarantees you a comfortable and carefree night so that you can start the day fit and alert the next morning.
Want to buy a roof tent?

Why you should camp with a roof tent:

- Large sleeping and lying area
- Can be flexibly mounted on almost any car
- No unnecessary transportation
- Does not take up any storage space
- Simple and quick assembly
- Robust and waterproof
- Window with mosquito net
Camping furniture: comfort & tidiness when camping
Important outdoor equipment such as chairs, table and loungers are also a must at the campsite.
Is tidiness the be-all and end-all for you?
There’s a practical solution for that too!
You are usually out and about for quite a long time on day trips or hikes and only return to the campsite late in the evening.
So that you can relax with your loved ones at the end of the evening, appropriate camping furniture is recommended.
Camping in a confined space can also get quite messy.
So that you still have everything together, you should buy suitable cupboards.
Sun and privacy protection can also be extremely helpful and should therefore be on your list.
The following camping furniture should not be missing on your camping vacation:
- Camping table
- Camping chairs
- Camping loungers and camp beds
- Camping lockers
- Awning
- Awning
Other basic travel equipment
As you can’t take all your bedding with you, a weatherproof sleeping bag and an air mattress are recommended for your camping vacation.
Depending on whether you are traveling with a caravan, roof tent or family tent, one or the other option may be more worthwhile.
On day trips, a rucksack is a must-have so that you always have everything to hand, from a water bottle and papers to an emergency tent.
Also think about the following accessories:
- Sleeping bag
- Mattress ( mattress base if necessary)
- Backpack
With comfortable camping furniture, you can enjoy your time at the campsite even more with your loved ones!
Kitchen: cooking utensils and food storage
When camping, you usually have to cater for yourself.
It is therefore important to take a basic supply of non-perishable food with you in advance.
You’ll also need some kitchen utensils so that you can cook something tasty anytime and anywhere, even when you’re on the move.
Here you can browse through the CAMPWERK Shop for products in the cooking category.
If you don’t have an integrated kitchen in your camper yet, but are traveling with a roof tent or tent trailer, a camping kitchen is the perfect piece of equipment to conjure up a delicious meal for you and your loved ones.
