A vacation in Potsdam is like a journey back in time.
You will experience how the Prussian and German kings once lived here and enter a world full of glamor and wealth.
The imposing rococo-style palaces and the royal parks with English, Roman and oriental garden design elements will send you into a faraway world with your rooftop tent!

Vacations in Potsdam: French castles, the Dutch Quarter & the tropics

Potsdam is not only the capital of Brandenburg in eastern Germany, but is also directly adjacent to Berlin.
It is perfect for a day trip on your next trip to Berlin.
Potsdam offers the elegance that you miss in a modern city.
The Prussian kings left their royal mark with lavish palaces, parks and gardens, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Most visitors come to Potsdam to see the rococo-style Sanssouci Palace built for Frederick the Great, but the city has much more to offer.
Chinese teahouses, Dutch quarters and a jungle in the middle of Germany.
Embark on an international journey right on your doorstep.
Potsdam saves you an expensive trip around the world.
Potsdam at a glance:

  • Palaces, parks & gardens
  • Sights such as:
    • Sanssouci Palace
    • Chinese teahouses
    • Dutch Quarter
    • Jungle

Potsdam is on the map here!

Potsdam is located southwest of Berlin.
It lies directly on the middle reaches of the Havel, which offers a very special location for nature lovers thanks to the surrounding forest and lake landscape.
The town is characterized by the alternation of wide valleys and moraine hills.
As a result, exploring the area quickly becomes a sporting challenge.
But you don’t want to miss this view!
On this map you can see Potsdam and the surrounding area: And here you can take a look at the location of the city in Germany:

Sightseeing: The city of castles

Sightseeing is part of a vacation.
Good thing you won’t get bored in Potsdam.
And not because Berlin is right next door, the city itself has a lot to offer.
Beautiful palaces, idyllic green spaces and parks and international world heritage sites.
In the Sanssouci park alone you will find another three castles and palaces.
But those who want more than just sightseeing will also get their money’s worth.
The Film Museum will take you on a journey through film history.
You should see this and much more during a visit:

  1. Sanssouci Park and Palace
  2. Cecilienhof Palace
  3. New Palace
  4. Potsdam Gardens.
  5. Dutch Quarter
  6. Museum Barberini
  7. Glienicke Bridge
  8. Biosphere Potsdam
  9. Alexandrovka
  10. Potsdam Film Museum

My top 3 hits:

Sanssouci Palace: without worries in the park

If you can remember a little French from school, you can easily explain the castle’s special name.
“Sans souci” means “without worries” and that is exactly what the old summer residence of King Frederick the Great is supposed to represent.
In his time, this was his retreat where he could relax in peace on his vineyard terraces.
The castle is fascinating in its rococo style and fits in perfectly with the surrounding park.
The park around the castle combines English, Roman and Oriental garden design elements and the best thing is that there is much more to discover.
In addition to the visitor magnet Sanssouci Palace, the park is home to other magnificent buildings such as Charlottenhof Palace, the clover-leaved Chinese Tea House and the New Palace.
Sanssouci at a glance:

  • Former summer residence
  • Retreat on vineyard terraces
  • Park
  • Additionally Charlottenhof Palace, Chinese Tea House or New Palace

This is what Sanssouci looks like: The yellow façade of the castle against the blue sky.

Dutch Quarter: The Netherlands on your doorstep

Why take another trip to Holland when Holland is right on your doorstep?
The Dutch Quarter gets its unique name from the 134 typical red Dutch houses in a total of 4 squares.
This makes it the largest closed Dutch building ensemble outside the Netherlands.
The area is also special in other respects, both historically and culturally.
There are often culinary events or even a pottery market.
It is definitely worth a visit.
This is what you can experience in the Dutch Quarter:

  • 134 typical red Dutch houses
  • Stroll through the streets, restaurants or visit the pottery market

You can take a look at the Dutch Quarter in this 360° view:

Biosphäre Potsdam: Tropical world, parrots & chameleons

It is a mysterious tropical world that you have to see to believe.
A colorful mixture of tropical plants, exotic animals such as chameleons and parrots, as well as an underwater world and a butterfly house.
You’ll never cease to be amazed here!
It’s a pure jungle feeling that you only know from movies like “The Jungle Book”.
The absolute highlight is the hourly thunderstorm with lightning and thunder, which transports young and old to a distant world.
You can experience this at the Biosphere:

  • Tropical world
  • Tropical plants & animals
  • Underwater world & butterfly house
  • Hourly thunderstorm

You can see such a butterfly in the butterfly house: An orange-yellow butterfly sits on a flower of the same color.

Camping in Potsdam: with your partner, family or dog

When camping with a roof tent, you always have your sleeping space, which you can also use for other purposes, on the roof of your car.
It is barely noticeable while driving, but can be folded up into an amazingly large and comfortable space in just a few minutes if required.
Depending on your preferences, travel route and number of people, you can choose one of the various roof tent models, which differ in size, material and features.
While a roof tent for 2 people is ideal for couples, a roof tent for 4 people is suitable for families with children.
Read more about different roof tent models, costs, roof load and advantages here: Roof tent for the car!

Advantages of camping: sleep in the great outdoors at low cost

Camping guarantees you the feeling of complete closeness to nature and freedom.
You can sit outside your roof tent until late in the evening and chat with your loved ones about past times or your upcoming vacation plans.
Your itinerary can be planned individually and the next day can be organized spontaneously.
You can get up comfortably with the first rays of sunshine, prepare breakfast in your camping kitchen and start the day in a camping chair or a camping lounger on the campsite.
Another advantage of camping: you’ll definitely get around cheaper than if you were to stay in a hotel or vacation apartment.
If you want to buy a rooftop tent, you only have to pay for food, activities, fuel and possibly a few campsites along the way.
These are the advantages of a camping vacation:

  • Cost-effective travel option
  • Intense time in nature with your loved ones
  • Sitting together outside until the evening hours
  • Flexible travel arrangements
  • Spontaneous and free organization of the day
  • Comfort and luxury in the roof tent
  • Space for the whole family
  • Sleeping place is ready anytime and anywhere

Material and processing.
The tent fabric of our trailer tents is made from a high-quality, 450 g blended fabric, also known as canvas. This unique combination of cotton and polyester combines the advantages of a natural fiber with those of a modern high-tech material. The result is a robust, breathable fabric that impresses with its pleasant feel and high dimensional stability.

The tent fabric, which is also used by the military, is impregnated and particularly tear-resistant thanks to the ripstop process. In this special weaving technique, thicker threads are woven into the fabric at intervals of around 10-15 millimetres, giving the fabric its characteristic tiled structure and exceptional tear resistance. It goes without saying that our fabrics are opaque and therefore offer optimum protection and privacy.
The basis of our trailer tents is a robust stainless steel frame with a thickness of 3×3 cm. A 1.8 cm thick, water-resistant wooden floor panel is securely fastened to this sturdy frame with stainless steel screws. The frame of the trailer tents is also made of galvanized steel tubing and special stainless steel components that ensure maximum stability. The modern surface finish not only offers a high level of corrosion protection, but also gives the material a pleasant feel and ensures a durable, weatherproof construction.
We rely exclusively on yarn from the German market leader Amann. Thanks to the combination of a cotton core and a high-tenacity polyester core, this yarn is characterized by a particularly high tensile strength and excellent water resistance.

On contact with water, the cotton coating swells and closes the seam holes created during sewing. For additional protection, all seams in the roof area are fitted with a transparent sealing strip to ensure maximum waterproofness.
Less is sometimes more.
We are often asked: What about the water column? For tent fabrics, the impermeability of the fabric is specified in the form of the water column. For cotton tents, this value is usually around 300 to 400 mm. However, our tent fabric offers an exceptionally high water column for cotton fabric of around 750 mm. This means that theoretically more than 75 cm of water can stand on the material before the first drops penetrate.

A major advantage of cotton as a natural raw material is its ability to swell when it gets damp, which provides additional waterproofing. In contrast, synthetic fabrics, which cannot swell, must have a much higher water column (between 3,000 and 10,000 mm, depending on the material) in order to achieve comparable waterproofness.
