Camping Tour Bavaria – The Bavarian capital of Munich is often associated with city life, beer and the Oktoberfest.
But even apart from that, the multi-faceted city impresses with numerous scenic highlights, idyllic nature, exciting sights and a charming old town with a charming flair.
This alone makes a visit to one of the most popular vacation destinations in Germany well worthwhile.
For a trip from Berlin, you will pass Leipzig, Bayreuth and Nuremberg and need to allow around 6 hours for the entire journey.
Camping Ratgeber:
Travel route to Munich: On the road with the roof tent
Our vacation to the south of Germany with my boyfriend and our roof tent begins today.
We start our road trip in Berlin in perfect weather and mild temperatures.
Out of the big city and into the amazing, mountainous landscapes of the Allgäu.
Green forests, mighty mountains and crystal-clear lakes hopefully await us not only in the region around Munich, but also on our way there.
To make the most of our vacation in nature, we plan to go camping to take a break from the stresses of everyday life and really switch off.
Camping is becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike, which is why we have also decided to embark on this adventure, which involves being close to nature and enjoying complete freedom.
The unspoiled campsites on our route and in southern Germany itself are particularly inviting for a camping vacation to enjoy a carefree and carefree time.

After a relaxed breakfast, we set off for the beautiful city of Leipzig at around 8:00 am.
We had almost 2 1/2 hours of driving ahead of us on the A9, but we were very excited about the city and looking forward to finally arriving.
Equipped with a lot of good humor, plenty of luggage and a roof tent, we started our camping trip, hoping to be able to enjoy togetherness again and experience an unforgettable vacation.

We took a relaxed stroll through the streets and made a few stops to see the famous St. Thomas Church, for example, before sitting down for a coffee in a nice café.
The zoo and wildlife park in Leipzig are also highly recommended, especially for families, but we also like to go for walks or bike rides to explore the city and the surrounding nature.

In the late afternoon, we finished our sightseeing tour in Leipzig and made our way to our second stop: Bayreuth.
Beforehand, we had, of course, extensively discussed our itinerary and were inspired by the scenic highlights we wanted to see here.
We continued our journey on the A9 and arrived about 2 hours later.
We had already parked our car at our chosen campsite, as we had planned to spend the night here.

Attractions & sightseeing: Hermitage, museums & co.
When we arrived in Bavaria, we were amazed at the mountainous area that was already visible here.
The city center consists of nice streets and alleys in historical style, which is why we let ourselves get carried away and strolled through the old town first.
The imposing Hermitage Park was the first thing on our to-do list!
Even though we had already prepared ourselves for a large palace garden, we didn’t expect the Hermitage to be so impressive and extensive.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to stay here any longer, but we could have spent a whole day here on our own. In general, Bayreuth is also characterized by many museums, palaces and magnificent buildings, which is why the town church, the new palace and the Margravial Opera House are highly recommended for art and history lovers.
We ended our day in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere on the roof terrace of the town hall.
From here, we had an impressive panoramic view of the entire city and really enjoyed our time with a cocktail in hand.
We recommend these places to visit and highlights in Bayreuth:
- Hermitage Park
- Stroll through the old town
- New castle
- City church
- Margravial Opera House
- Roof terrace of the town hall
Bayreuth: City map
The city of Bayreuth is located on the Red Main in the German state of Bavaria.
Around 75,000 inhabitants currently live in this charming city, which is a popular destination for cultural sightseeing.
Overnight stays and camping in Bayreuth
At the end of our first successful day, we planned to spend the night at a campsite that we had already picked out in advance.
We were exhausted and exhausted from all the impressions of the day, but we had already seen and taken in a lot.
We opted for camping because, firstly, it is cheaper than sleeping in a hotel, secondly, it is not only extremely practical but also really comfortable in our roof tent and, thirdly, it allows us to organize our day completely flexibly.
Here we enjoyed our evening in front of a campfire and were able to get up the next morning whenever we wanted. Tip! If you are also interested in camping comfortably and flexibly, then read all about the practical and comfortable roof tent here:
Our campsite was not in the middle of the city center, but central enough to reach all the sights and attractions and at the same time sleep in an idyllic atmosphere surrounded by nature:

Stage destination 3: Historical sights in Nuremberg
Rested and motivated for the day ahead, I was already awake when the first rays of sunshine dawned.
We made ourselves a quick breakfast and then headed for the next point on our route: Nuremberg!
We drove for about an hour on the A9 to the popular city.
We set off quite early as we wanted to continue our journey to Munich today.
The streets of Nuremberg, just like our destinations before, are characterized by medieval architecture.
As my friend in particular is hugely interested in historical art and history, we definitely had to make a stop here.

Bucket list: Our highlights in Nuremberg
Arriving in the second largest city in Bavaria, we were immediately greeted by an all-round package of culture, architecture and art in historical style.
Almost all the sights are within easy walking distance and can therefore be visited one after the other.
We started at the main market square, which is the central square in the old town.
This alone offers enough impressive input to spend some time here.
From here, we took a look at the Gothic Frauenkirche and made our way to the Imperial Castle.
Nuremberg’s landmark is not only impressive from the outside, but we were also able to visit the Palas, the museum and the Tiefer Brunnen and had a unique view over the entire old town from here.
The highlight of our stop for me was definitely when we literally dived into the underworld of Nuremberg and took a journey through time in the historic rock corridors.
We opted for a guided tour and were given a fascinating insight into the history behind the spectacular formations.
The many corridors and tunnels were carved into the rock as early as the Middle Ages and were initially used for maturing beer.
After the Second World War, the hidden tunnels were used as bunkers.
You should take a look at these attractions in Nuremberg:
- Hauptmarkt: Central square in the old town
- Gothic Frauenkirche
- Imperial Castle: The landmark of Nuremberg
- Historic rock corridors
Nuremberg: City map
Nuremberg is the second largest city in Bavaria after Munich.
It is located in the north and is currently home to around 518,000 inhabitants.
Characterized by many medieval buildings, but at the same time charming places, Nuremberg is a popular destination for many German holidaymakers.
Camping in Nuremberg: nature and relaxation
At my request, we spent the rest of the day shopping.
Nuremberg doesn’t just impress with its beautiful buildings, but is also a paradise for shopping.
The most popular stores, from chic to trendy and extravagant, can be found in the pedestrian zone alone.
We spent a few pleasant hours here and finally made our way back to our campsite, exhausted and with full bags.
We had already chosen our campsite in advance so we didn’t have to travel far to get to our sleeping place.

Final destination: Camping and short vacation in Munich
We started the next morning relaxed and comfortable.
With the help of our camping stove and a large selection of camping utensils, we conjured up a delicious breakfast, including scrambled eggs.
While we were still savoring the last few minutes at the idyllic campsite, we were already planning the rest of our route.
It took us about 2 hours to drive to our final destination: Munich.
Having never been here before, I was excited to see what awaited me.
I quickly fell in love with the mountainous nature, charming streets and friendly people and was happy to have chosen Munich as my final destination.
Here we planned to explore the breathtaking landscapes while camping and therefore spend a few days here before making our way back.

Our vacation in Munich: Highlights & Events
We started our tour at the central square in Munich’s old town: Marienplatz.
From here, all the cultural and historical sights are within easy walking distance.
The Frauenkirche, Nymphenburg Palace and the Residenz are probably the most important points to visit here.
However, we were also particularly interested in the scenic highlights and went on many walks and hikes, and we couldn’t miss out on Hellabrunn Zoo.
We can also recommend the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s landmark market, which offers a huge range of fresh produce, traditional foods and nice souvenirs on an area of around 22,000 m².
If you happen to be in Munich in the fall, don’t miss the famous Oktoberfest to get a fascinating insight into the huge traditional festival.
The most important sights and must-dos in Munich:
- Walks in the idyllic countryside
- Hikes in the mountains
- Church of Our Lady
- Nymphenburg Palace
- Residence
- Hellabrunn Zoo
- Viktualienmarkt
- Traditional Oktoberfest
Campsite recommendation: Natural, cozy & optimal location
We chose the “Waldcamping München-Obermenzing” campsite for our camping trip.
It was in an ideal location to enjoy the peace and quiet and togetherness in the beautiful countryside in the evening, but still only a short distance from the popular sights and highlights.
This meant that we didn’t have to travel far in the morning and evening to complete our planned to-do list and return to the campsite in the evening.

Munich: City map
The Bavarian capital of Munich is best known for the annual Oktoberfest.
But apart from that, the popular city also impresses with a variety of attractions worth seeing, which is why numerous tourists from all over the world come here every year. We spent a few days here and had a great time both in the city itself and in the evening at our campsite with a few Munich beers.
Unfortunately, the time and our trip passed far too quickly and we had to start our journey home.
The camping trip definitely met all our expectations and was a unique opportunity to completely switch off from the stress of everyday life and immerse ourselves in the idyllic natural surroundings.
We definitely had an unforgettable time and plan to go on more short trips with the car and our roof tent from now on.
