Camping tour to Lake Constance via Leutkirch, Wangen, Lindau and Bregenz

Camping tour to Lake Constance – It will be a while before spring arrives.
Nevertheless, we want to whet your appetite for camping again, today with a travel report.
Stephan was on the road in the iKamper Skycamp Mini from NRW to Lake Constance – On the road to Baden-Württemberg in a camper! With the first rays of sunshine in spring, the urge to go outside naturally arises immediately.
No sooner said than done – after all, you can set off straight away with the roof tent.
As there is also a long weekend due to a public holiday, it’s the perfect timing for the first trip of the year.
A throwback!

Tour planning as far as Lake Constance

My destination for the road trip is Lake Constance!
On the way there, I want to take in a few towns and areas just before the mountains.
Especially the Allgäu region!
If you come from a big city, you usually don’t have much green around you.
Everything should be different in the Allgäu!
Green meadows, happy cows and the Alps in the background.
What a great idea for the weekend?
A bit of relaxation, recreation, plus perhaps a great story or two to experience, e.g. in the small villages of Baden-Württemberg.

Travel route through the Allgäu

I would like to make our first stop in the Allgäu!
We want to spend the night here, preferably as rural as possible, and then set off with the first rays of sunshine so that we can fully enjoy the mountain panorama!
On my route, I will therefore try to ride through many small villages and towns, via Leutkirch or in the Allgäu.
Depending on where it’s most beautiful, we’ll simply stop and take a break with our camper.
Stop 1 for a break and overnight stay:

  • Leutkirch in the Allgäu
  • and cheeks

Once we arrive at Lake Constance, we will enjoy a wonderful round trip to Friedrichshafen, Lindau and cities such as Bregenz.
Destinations on Lake Constance:

  1. Lindau
  2. Bregenz

The last sticking point in my little trip planning, I had to persuade my wife!
To make sure she was there spontaneously, I simply surprised her with the fully packed car and a delicious picnic basket.
Not for right away, of course, but for our first break on the way to Lake Constance!
I’m taking you on my little Lake Constance tour today!

On the road in a 2-person roof tent: Skycamp Mini

The roof tent offers space for up to 2 people.
Read more about the iKamper Skycamp Mini here.

Trip to the Allgäu: summer, sun & sunshine

It’s supposed to be 26 degrees today, pure sunshine!
Luckily it’s a bit cooler in the morning, the camper is ready, the picnic basket is packed, my wife is ready to go and we’re ready to go.

Stage destination 1: Leutkirch in the Allgäu and green meadows

Ahead of us lies a journey of 4 hours 47 min.
with a stage distance of 526.2 km to our first destination, Leutkirch in the Allgäu.
We’ll be traveling on the A3 and A8 with our camper, wife and lots of good humour.
If all goes well, we’ll be there by around 1 p.m., enough time to take in the fresh air that we hope awaits us in the Allgäu!
We actually made good time on the highway and arrived 30 minutes earlier than planned.
Time to find a parking space and finally eat something tasty!
The small but pretty, idyllic town center of Leutkirch in the Allgäu has many small, quaint restaurants.
However, we decided to take a short tour of the town first, as you can reach everything here on foot.
There is a small town stream, friendly people and, of course, the unmistakable Swabian shame.

Quite unexpectedly, we didn’t end up in one of the small, quaint restaurants, but actually treated ourselves to a delicious lunchtime snack in a butcher’s shop.
With the feeling that you’re right in the countryside, a Leberkäsbrötchen tastes twice as good!
We also had some white cabbage salad, a delicious little meal that we enjoyed on a park bench right outside the butcher’s shop.
This is how a great camping trip should start!
If you would like to visit the butcher’s shop, here is the address:

More Information

The city offers a lot of greenery and can be driven through in less than ten minutes.
It is also practical that there is a highway exit south and north, so you can make a perfect little stopover here.
Of course, we asked the lady directly for her best tips.
She recommended Zeil Castle in particular, but the old town is also said to be very interesting for young couples.
Tips for your trip!
Top 3 for Leutkirch in the Allgäu:

  1. Historic old town – experienced for yourself, a dream in the Allgäu
  2. Zeil Castle – just 10 minutes outside the city
  3. Schmidsfelden glassmaking village – for those with a little more time on their hands

After visiting the glass-making village of Schmidsfelden, we continued on to our overnight stay in the town, from where we would only need half an hour to Lindau tomorrow.
Perfect for the first rays of sunshine in the morning and a perfect mountain backdrop!

Stage destination 2: Wangen im Allgäu

The number one destination for us, a hearty dinner after a snack at lunchtime and a perfect campsite where we can easily register, as we are only staying one night.
Fortunately, it’s not far from Leutkirch to Wangen and can be reached in less than 30 minutes by camper via the A96.
The route is really beautiful, as you drive towards the mountains the whole time.
With the old one in view, you drive past cows, farms and forests, just as you would imagine the Allgäu to be.

Route and route planning: Leutkirch to Wangen

  • Distance: 23.7 km (Leutkirch to Wangen)

More Information

Wangen as a town is a little bigger than Leutkirch in the Allgäu.
It feels about three times as big, so the charm of the town center is naturally different.
While Leutkirch seemed like a dreamy little village, naturally a little larger with around 20,000 inhabitants, Wangen is a small, bustling town.
I would therefore recommend making a stop in Leutkirch on your route to Lake Constance and staying overnight.
Here you will also find small, cute campsites and your driving time will only be extended by about 20 minutes.
Nevertheless, the town was beautiful and with a little time, not just a quick overnight stay, you can certainly spend a few nice days here.
Of course, I also asked for three tips in the city center that I should definitely recommend.
Then it was straight on to the campsite.
Tips for your trip!
Top 3 in Wangen:

  1. Hiking around the town – more precisely the “Argen confluence, the suspension bridge around Wangen”
  2. The historic old town – as always in the Allgäu
  3. Scheidegg waterfalls – pure nature, if you have a little more time in your luggage here too

Overnight stay and campsite in Wangen

Where do you look for a good campsite?
On the Internet, of course!
We quickly found a good campsite in Wangen that had good recommendations.

Tip! Looking for recommendations?
You can find them here: Campsite Baden-Württemberg

We found “Camping Wangen” with a manageable 30 pitches for campers on a total area of 1.4 hectares and a plot size of 50 m², which means plenty of space and peace and quiet.
You pay 7.00 euros per person, children 4.00 euros and a pitch fee of 8.00 – 12.50 euros, not payable by credit card (!) only with cash and Maestro.

Lake Constance and mountain scenery: 2-day short break

Even though Wangen and Lindau on Lake Constance are only half an hour apart, I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to drive up to the Alps with my camper in the morning sun.
No sooner said than done!
We set off on our tour at 6 a.m., perfect timing, as the sun was just above the first mountain peaks and shortly afterwards we were already on the road.
Just as the mountain panorama was already impressive on the route from Leutkirch to Wangen, it was now even more impressive!
Every single mountain peak was recognizable, the hills rose with every kilometer and as we enjoyed the increasingly warm air, we could see mountain peaks with snow.
What a picture!

Stage destination 3: Lindau on Lake Constance

How beautiful is this town?
Lindau is a real pearl, a real gem.
The road naturally takes you straight to the beach.
When we took our first look at Lake Constance, our eyes immediately opened wide.
The view is just gorgeous!
So we immediately grabbed the first available parking space.
The drive there was super quick, it took us less than 20 minutes on the A96.

One advantage that I really appreciate about my camper and roof tent is that I can use every parking space flexibly.
This meant we were at Lake Constance right in the morning sunshine, a gentle breeze, a few people and this incredible peace and quiet!
As in Leutkirch in the Allgäu, we didn’t need a fancy restaurant, we grabbed a small coffee and then sat on the next best park bench.
With a view of the lake, the slowly drifting waves and the orange morning sun reflected in the lake.
An absolute source of peace.

Harbor: Lindau is so beautiful

More Information

In fact, we enjoyed the peace and quiet so much that we sat here for a whole 2 hours.
Of course, the coffee had long since been drunk, but our conversations weren’t over yet.
At some point, however, the feeling of hunger and the absolute desire for a tasty breakfast kicked in.
The time has come, we need a campsite!
After looking at the best reviews on online portals again, we decided on: Park-Camping Lindau am See. On the way back to our camper, I made a quick stop at the little store where we bought our first coffee.
If anyone knows what we should do in Lindau, it’s the person who made us a delicious coffee at 7am!
So I got the top recommendations for Lindau straight away.
Tips for your trip!
Top3 in Lindau:

  1. Experience the island town of Lindau
  2. By boat to the Pfänder
  3. Explore Lindau on foot – my tip!

Overnight stay and campsite in Lindau

After a long day at the lake, we finally got back and my legs were really sore.
But it was so worth it, we saw a lot of Lindau, the city center, went to small stores, we ate delicious food and above all we let our souls dangle.
This is what a spontaneous weekend trip should look like.
The only thing missing now is delicious food on the barbecue and a good wine.
While we were still on 1 hectare in Wangen with around 50 campers, we now have over 5 hectares here.
Camping in Lindau comprises 214 pitches for campers, with a plot size of 70-100 m².
The price per person is 10.00 euros, children 5.00 euros and includes a stand fee, payable in cash.

Stage destination 4: Bregenz

We made the most of the night and got a good night’s sleep.
Once my tablet was fully charged, I got straight down to planning.
It’s really idyllic here at the campsite and before we set off, we’ll definitely go down to the lake for a quick look.
Which city has more charm at first glance on Google?
Friedrichshafen and Bregenz are both wonderful towns.
Both are on Lake Constance, in the immediate vicinity, but one has to win!
Because in this beautiful weather, we want to spend as much time as possible outside and not on the street

Friedrichshafen

There’s even an opera here, in the middle of Lake Constance.
We have to go and see it!

More Information

When we arrived in Bregenz, we looked for a small parking lot, relatively central and at fair prices for this wonderful vacation region.
Parking fees here are 5 euros per hour or part thereof from 6 am to 11 pm.
The times between 11pm and 6am were free.
First of all, I wanted to go to the opera!
It looked really spectacular on the tablet, and if we didn’t have to drive back home tonight, we would definitely go and see a performance!

Bregenz Opera Lake Constance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3UfrfWpJxU What I really wanted to do on the last day was eat a delicious Wiener schnitzel with chips!
Right by the lake, in the sunshine, with a cool breeze, to reflect on the weekend.
We chose a central restaurant for this, right on the lake of course.
There’s a great restaurant just a few minutes’ walk from the opera, and even better, there are tasty treats on every corner. Of course, I asked the innkeeper what we should definitely see in Bregenz!
Even if we don’t manage to do anything today, I have some great insider tips for our next visit to Bregenz.
Tips for your trip!
Top 3 in Bregenz:

  1. Going to the opera
  2. Swimming in Lake Constance / boating
  3. Sunset at the lake

Many thanks for Stephan for the experience report!
