We are Maarten and Renske from Brabant.
In November 2022 we are leaving for 9 months to a year with a regular electric car and rooftent for a trip to South Africa and back.
In total about 40,000 km… a great expedition.

Camping Ratgeber:
Close to nature
To give you an idea of us as travelers; we are great lovers of nature.
The wilder the nature the happier we are.
That’s why we love wild camping in the middle of nature.
On our 3rd date we also secretly went wild camping in the Netherlands.
Of course without leaving any traces behind.
Now we often take long hikes with a tent on our back into nature, to get to places where there are no cars or people.
We did this in Norway, Peru and Bolivia, among other places.
Camping in Africa
Camping with the rooftop tent is fairly new to us, and we really like it!
We did this once before during a 5-week trip through Namibia and Botswana.
Then we rented a car including a rooftent in Johannesburg.
The nice thing about sleeping on the car is that you always have all your stuff close at hand and of course you have a far view from the tent.
But also that you are less likely to bring messes into the tent than if you sleep on the ground.
Last but not least, the tent is super quick to set up and fold down and you always have it at hand.
For our expedition to South Africa, we now have the iKamper Skycamper mini 3.0 from Campwerk.
This is a much more luxurious rooftop tent than we were used to on our previous trip.
Which is of great value to us since we will be living in this for a year….
Roof tent with thoughtful details
So what is the difference from our previous rooftop tent?
This is already in the materials and workmanship.
This is really well thought out.
The tent sets up in 2 minutes.
You never have to do possible with pegs and finding flat ground without plants or stones.
As long as the car is straight it is fine!
So it’s really worth it when we have a lunch break and want to take a little nap in the shade, for example.
Or to spot animals from the tent!
In addition, the rooftop tent has large windows on the sides, front and top.
So you can really enjoy where you are, and even count the stars!
But the details really add up… the blackout is really good.
Ideal for me, Renske, because I am immediately awake when light comes in.
That way I can still sleep in a bit.
And the window blackout can be opened quickly with drawstrings.
Wonderful if you know how we always have a hard time rolling it up.
For our trip, the hard cover is also a great value.
This makes it a small package with little air resistance, but also makes it hard to open for others… in short; we are already fans, and the trip has yet to begin!
The only drawback to a rooftop tent is that you can only camp where the car can go.
Camping on a small desert island, or far away from a road….
That’s not an option.
But we can live with that….
Roof tent on an electric car
The rooftop tent is now mounted on our eletric car for the expedition.
You may wonder how this works out.
Deliberately we now leave it on the car continuously to gain experience.
By going camping but also the driving itself.
Ultimately, the rooftop tent results in extra resistance and thus a lower range of the car.
But, this is not too bad.
We had expected a greater impact.
And actually, this is the only difference of camping with the rooftop tent on an electric instead of a fossil car.
Just fine!
Sustainable driving and camping
We ended up planning this expedition because we love traveling, but also want to make our lives more sustainable.
Therefore, the idea of doing this with an electric car, which we charge along the way with solar panels that we take with us.
This way we can still get everywhere.
Along the way we will visit other innovative initiatives that also contribute to sustainability.
This is to gain knowledge and share this knowledge.
To organize an expedition like this is quite a project involving much more than we had thought beforehand.
We are happy to share our story and answer your questions.
Perhaps once live at Campwerk on location?
If you would like to meet us live; from August 29 through September 10 we will tour the Netherlands and will also visit CAMPWERK Nederland in Tynaarlo.
The route will be announced on our website in a few weeks. With green regards, Renske Cox and Maarten van Pel www.4x4electric.com
