More InformationCan I drive a trailer without a special driver's license?
YES...
We’ve noticed that many customers have the impression that a trailer can only be driven with a special “trailer license”. This is not correct. You can also tow trailers with a normal Class B driver’s license:
Anyone can tow the unbraked on-road tent trailer with 750 kg permitted total weight.
The braked on-road tent trailer with 1,300 kg permitted total weight can be towed, provided that the permissible total mass of the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. This means that the permissible total weight of the towing vehicle (Field F.1) is a maximum of 2,200 kg.
The braked off-road tent trailer with 1,500 kg permitted total weight can be towed, provided that the permissible total mass of the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. This means that the permissible total weight of the towing vehicle (Field F.1) is a maximum of 2,000 kg.

If the values don't match...
then there are the following options:
Downrating (Recommended)
When downrating, the permissible total weight of the trailer, e.g., 1,300 kg (for the on-roader), is reduced to the point where the permissible total mass of the car-trailer combination does not exceed 3,500 kg OR until we reach 750 kg, which you are always allowed to drive. Downrating doesn’t change anything technically on the trailer, only the registration in the papers is reduced. The downrating can be easily upgraded to the original level later, should the towing vehicle change, for example.
Driver's License B96
Holders of the driver’s license class B are allowed to drive a car-trailer combination up to 4,250 kg permissible total weight with the so-called B96 extension. This requires a driving course of at least seven hours with a practical and theoretical part, but without an exam. With this extension, the towing vehicle can then have a permissible total weight of maximum 2,950 kg (Field F.1) with a braked on-roader and 2,750 kg with an off-roader.
Driver's License BE
With the driver’s license class BE, you are allowed to tow trailers with a permissible total mass of up to 3,500 kg in addition to the vehicle, and are thus prepared for all our products. The driver’s license class requires a driving course with theoretical and practical exams.
