Car journey game ideas – When going on a camping vacation to Italy, France or another place in Germany, the younger passengers often get bored.
To keep the children occupied in the car, it is worth playing travel games.
There is often not enough space in the car for a large game board.
And surfaces are often not quiet enough to leave a pile of cards lying around.
That’s why we need other ideas to keep them occupied.
Here are 6 ideas to keep the car journey exciting even in traffic jams and on the highway.
Camping Ratgeber:
A to Z – Game
In this game, a category is determined by all players and then all other players have to name matching terms from A to Z.
So if the category is camping items, person 1 says: “A for extension table“, person 2: “B for cup“, person 3: “C for camping chair” and person 4: “D for roof tent“.
The game then continues in turn.
Difficult letters, such as X, Y and Z, can also be left out.
This is how you play the A to Z game:
- Set category
- Players name terms
- Start with A
- Ends with Z
- Possibly omit X, Y, Z
Guess car license plates or brands
This is particularly fun on the highway.
Depending on what is to be expected, the players either say the name of a car brand or the city from which the license plate of a passing car originates.
If in doubt, you can quickly look it up on your smartphone or come up with a creative solution.
At a glance:
- Guess car make from passing cars
- Or city on license plates of other cars
- Not sure?

Telling stories
That sounds quite straightforward at first.
However, the aim of this game is for everyone to write a sentence.
For example, one player starts with “Once upon a time there was a family that went on vacation in a roof tent”.
Then the next player has to say a sentence based on this story.
This creates funny stories with the whole family and stimulates creativity.
You should pay attention to this when telling stories:
- Player starts with a sentence
- Next says matching sentence
- Funny stories & creativity
I see something you don’t see
The classic guessing game in the car.
One player chooses an object and begins to describe it (“I see something you don’t see and it’s green”).
The others now have to guess which object it is.
That’s what makes this game so special:
- Player describes object
- “I see something you don’t see”
- Others guess which object
Animals guessing
Who has guessed the most animals at the end?
Animals can of course also be guessed.
One player thinks of an animal and the others have to ask yes/no questions to guess it.
However, to prevent the guessing game from dragging on indefinitely, the player who thought of the animal can only be asked 15 questions.
If someone else manages to guess the animal, they win.
If not, then the player who thought of the animal wins.
Here is an overview of the “guess the animal” game:
- One player thinks of an animal
- Others ask yes / no questions
- But are only allowed to ask 15 questions
- Winner: someone else guesses animal
- Or: nobody guesses animal = 1st player
Word snake
Another game that can be continued until tiredness sets in.
One player starts to say a compound word.
For example, “roof tent”, another player must then say another word that contains the word behind it.
In this case, for example, “tent canvas” would be possible.
This game can often go on for several hours and encourages creativity and vocabulary.
And this is how you play the “word snake”:
- Teammate says a compound word
- Next: Word beginning with trailing
- Can last for several hours
- Promotes creativity & vocabulary
