Inline skating & rollerblading: Tips for beginners
In the beginning, with both inline skates and roller skates, it is helpful if you have a second person to help you with your balance.
Or if you can support yourself against a wall.
You should not overestimate yourself.
Once you are standing safely, the next step is to learn how to fall and brake.
Before you take on high speeds, it makes sense to master these things so that you can avoid accidents.
- First steps: Help from 2nd person or wall
- Do not overestimate
Let’s go!
Starting off with inline skates
When you first start skating, you can place your legs slightly wider than hip-width apart and bend your knees slightly.
This will give you a stable basic position.
If you now want to take your first steps on skates, push one leg slightly backwards and push off.
Shift your weight onto your other leg.
Then put the other one forward at an angle.
If you have picked up more momentum, you can place both legs next to each other.
Starting off with inline skates:
- Place legs wide apart
- Knees slightly bent
- Leg back and push off
- Shift weight to other leg
- Other foot diagonally forward
- If you have enough momentum, place your legs next to each other

All beginnings are difficult: exercises for roller skates
To get a first feel for the roller skates, you can roll them back and forth across the floor.
This gliding movement could be compared to shuffling.
To pick up speed, you should push off with one of the stoppers at the front of the shoe.
If you are a little more experienced, you can do this alternately on both sides to gain momentum.
Starting off with roller skates at a glance:
- Slide roller skates back and forth on the floor (like shuffling)
- Push off with stopper at the front of the shoe
- Alternating between left and right

How to get around the bend: 2 tips
To get around the bend safely, put the foot that is on the side you want to go into in front of the other.
Then lean on that side.
So if you want to turn left, put your left foot in front of your right foot and lean on your left foot.
The other way round for a right-hand bend.
For a turn, while you have both skates on the ground, turn your hips slightly in the desired direction.
2 tips for better short turns:
- Shift weight: left turn left foot in front of right & lean on left foot
- Turn your hips in the desired direction
Stop safely: Tips for braking
It is important to learn how to brake at the beginning so that you do not get into dangerous situations.
There are different types of brakes.
These can be used for both inline skates and roller skates.
- Important to learn at the beginning
For the start: Heel brake with stopper
One option is the heel brake.
To do this, use the rubber stopper on the heel.
It can help to shift your weight onto one leg, tilt the other foot slightly backwards and let the stopper drag over the asphalt.
This variation is recommended for beginners.
- Use heel stoppers
- Tilt your foot slightly backwards
- Let the stopper drag over asphalt
For advanced users: T-brake
Then there is the T-brake.
With this, you keep one foot straight and place the other across behind it.
You then let the wheels drag across the ground and this slows down the speed.
However, you should be careful when doing this, especially as a beginner.
For inexperienced skaters, this technique can quickly lead to strains or falls.
- Place one foot crosswise behind the other
- Drag the rear foot over asphalt
Lots of balance: Braking in the snow plow
There is also braking in snow flight.
However, this requires a high level of balance.
In this variant, put your heels together so that your feet form a V.
The speed is then slowed down by the slightly transverse rollers.
- Feet together at the back (V formation)
Learning to fall: avoid injuries
When falling, you should be careful not to fall backwards.
This can lead to unpleasant injuries to your back and the back of your head.
It is best to fall forwards, first onto the knee pads and then onto the elbow and hand pads.
You can practise this well in advance on a meadow so that it works in an emergency.
- Do not fall backwards
- Knees first, then elbows & wrists

Protective equipment & Co.
There are a few things to consider when riding roller skates or inline skates.
First of all, choosing the right shoes.
For example, there are sturdier shoes and different wheels.
These can affect comfort.
It is therefore worth trying out the shoes before longer tours.
The right protective equipment is also important.
Minor falls are often unavoidable, especially for beginners.
The right protective equipment includes a helmet, knee, elbow and wrist pads.
Equipped with these, it is also worth practicing various falling techniques.
If you fall, you will be able to react instinctively and avoid serious injuries.
It would be a shame if you had to spend the rest of your vacation at the campsite.
This is important for protection:
- Try out shoes beforehand
- Practicing falling techniques
- Helmet
- Wrist protectors
- Elbow pads
- Knee pads
