Outdoor games with the family: 6 tips for campers

Outdoor games – Get out of the roof tent and into the great outdoors!
You spend a lot of time outdoors when camping.
To make your time a little more enjoyable, you can play outdoor games with the family.
Especially nice for the kids: the great outdoors and fresh air.
Here are 6 tips for games that you can play outside in the fresh air with the whole family.
Including badminton or badminton, boules or boccia, frisbee, kubb or Viking chess, mikado and ring toss.

Badminton / badminton

You’ve arrived at the beach, but swimming isn’t on the agenda for now?
Then how about a game of badminton or badminton?
Badminton and badminton have slightly different rules, but can be played with the same equipment for recreational players.
You can get rackets and shuttlecocks either in sports stores or online.

Rules: Badminton or badminton?

About the rules: In badminton, you play with each other and try to hit the ball back and forth as often as possible without it falling to the ground.
In badminton, you play against each other.
You can mark out a playing field in the sand or grass.
Many campsites and sports facilities also have a badminton court.
You will also need a net to hit the ball over.
However, these can also be dismantled and transported so that you can play badminton anywhere.
It is also possible to simply stretch a line to hit the ball over.
The aim of the game is to prevent the ball from falling to the ground on your side of the net.

Important: You should warm up beforehand to prevent torn ligaments and strains.

That is the aim of badminton:

  • Playing together
  • Hit the ball back & forth for as long as possible

And here you can find an overview of the rules for badminton:

  • Two playing fields with teams, divided by a net
  • Ball is hit over the net into the other court
  • Ball must not touch the ground in own playing area

Boules / Boccia

In this game, you throw balls made of steel or hard plastic as close as possible to a target ball.
The small target ball is thrown first.
Then the other players try to throw the differently colored or patterned balls as close as possible to the small ball.
The winner is the player whose ball is closest to the target ball.
Another advantage: most campsites already have pre-built boules or boccia facilities.
But the game can also be played in a park or on the beach.
Just make sure you don’t hit anyone with the balls.
You should pay attention to this when playing boules or boccia:

  • Throw balls as close as possible to the target ball
  • Winnings: Ball closest to the target ball
  • Many campsites: Facilities for boules / boccia
  • But also possible on the go (beach & park)

Frisbee

You throw colorful discs at each other.
You can play this in a relaxed way with each other or you can play a game of Ultimate Frisbee against each other.
In Ultimate Frisbee, you play against each other in two teams.
You have to stand still with a frisbee in your hand and then throw it to your teammate.
The aim is to get the frisbee into a predetermined end zone.
A bit like scoring a goal in soccer.
You should try to catch the opposing team’s passes and throw them to your own teammate.
In the end, the team that gets the frisbee into their end zone wins.
This is how you play a game of Ultimate Frisbee:

  1. Organize teams
  2. Set end zones
  3. Bring the frisbee into the end zone by throwing it
  4. Catch throws from the generic team
  5. Win: has frisbee in end zone

Kubb / Viking chess

The chessboard was too bulky?
No problem, you can play this mixture of chess and skittles in the great outdoors with plenty of space.
In Viking chess or Kubb, you place the corresponding pieces in front of each other.
Then you have to try to knock over your opponent’s pieces with a wooden stick.
At the very end, the king in the middle is knocked over.
You can play the game in pairs, but also with more players in two teams.
These are the rules of Kubb or Viking Chess at a glance:

  1. Place the figures in front of each other
  2. Knock over generic figures with a baton
  3. Finally: knock over the king in the middle

Mikado

Colorful sticks that must not wobble.
The well-known Mikado game is also available in a large version, where the sticks are at least 75 cm long and therefore also suitable for outdoor use.
In Mikado, you first put the sticks down and hold them firmly.
Then you drop them.
The players then have to pull individual sticks out of the pile of sticks.
If the other sticks wobble, it’s the next player’s turn.
The winner is the player who has collected the most points.
You can recognize this by the different markings on the sticks.
However, if this is too complicated for you, you could also go by who has the most sticks.
Wobble or not – this is how you play Mikado:

  1. Drop the bars in a jumble
  2. Pull out individual rods in sequence
  3. If other bars wobble, then next player
  4. Winner: Most points (or bars) at the end

Ring toss

In this game, rings have to be thrown over bars that have been set up.
The sticks have different values.
The more points a player hits, the more points they receive.
As you need some space for this, it is best played outside the campsite on the beach or in the park.
Especially nice: You can also buy many ring toss sets in bright colors.
Or you can paint the set together with the whole family.
