Rooftop tent for motorhomes – A rooftop tent actually fits on almost any vehicle – so theoretically also on a motorhome.
The prerequisite for fitting a roof tent is that the vehicle has roof racks onto which the roof tent can be pushed.
With a roof tent on a motorhome, you can travel flexibly, have enough space for all your camping equipment and at the same time have a super comfortable place to sleep on the roof.

Camping Ratgeber:
Rooftop tent on a motorhome?
Yes, that’s possible!
Can a roof tent be attached to a motorhome?
In principle, yes!
Although you will travel a little slower with a larger vehicle, you will have much more space for camping furniture or other passengers.
An additional tent trailer, which is attached to the rear of the trailer coupling, provides even more extra space.
No matter which roof tent model you choose, it can be easily mounted on your Audi, BMW, VW or camper van.

Is it difficult to install the roof tent?
Here is a general guide to attaching the roof tent to the roof:
Roof load, assembly & superstructure: it’s that simple
First of all, the general installation of the roof tent.
First of all, you need to determine the roof load of your car.
This can usually be found in the manufacturer’s vehicle registration document.
If you now want to buy a roof tent, you should pay attention to the weight of the respective model.
A roof tent for 2 people weighs around 50 kg – 60 kg, while a roof tent for 4 people weighs around 70 kg.
When choosing a suitable roof tent, you should therefore first check how high the roof load of your car is and match this with the weight of your desired roof tent.
Roof racks are also required on your car, as the roof tent must be pushed onto these and secured.
In general, a roof tent can be attached to any car that is equipped with roof racks – you just need to consider the roof load of your car and the weight of the roof tent in advance and adjust them to each other.
This is how you can mount a roof tent on your car:
- Determine the roof load of your car
- Check the weight of the desired roof tent
- Coordinate roof load and weight
- Mounting the roof rack on the car roof
- Slide the matching roof tent onto the brackets and attach it
Advantages: Motorhome with roof tent
A vacation with a motorhome is practical for traveling as flexibly as possible and being able to easily stow and transport some outdoor accessories, such as a camping kitchen or a camping toilet.
With a rooftop tent, on the other hand, you can stop off anywhere and at any time, as you always have a comfortable and spacious place to sleep right at hand.
If you want to combine the advantages of both travel options, you can also simply attach your roof tent to a motorhome.
A motorhome including roof tent offers you these advantages:
- Enormous amount of storage space for camping furniture etc.
- Integrated kitchen, toilet, seating
- Space for several passengers
- Comfortable bed on the roof
- Sleeping with panoramic windows
Campsite and pitch
Where can I park my motorhome?
If you have decided to travel with a motorhome and a roof tent, the easiest option is to camp on a campsite, as wild camping is generally prohibited and you can’t just park your caravan anywhere on the side of the road.
You should therefore roughly plan your itinerary in advance and look for suitable campsites.
If you want a little more privacy and don’t want to sleep in the middle of the overcrowded pitches, you can also opt for pitches that are close to nature and legal.
