Roof tent without railing – You want to buy a roof tent, but are wondering whether it will even fit on your car?
First of all: a roof tent generally fits on almost any car – whether Audi, BMW, Mercedes or VW.
Your car just needs to have roof racks and installation is no problem.
Roof racks are easier to attach to the railing, but with the right bracket, a roof tent can also be mounted on the roof without a railing.

Does a roof tent fit on every car?

With a rooftop tent, you can not only travel completely flexibly and freely, but also have a comfortable and, above all, quickly set up place to sleep anytime and anywhere!
Whether you opt for a roof tent for 2 people or a roof tent for 4 people – you are definitely guaranteed a carefree camping trip.
But what do I need to consider when buying a roof tent and will a roof tent fit on my car even without a railing?

Mounting on the roof

Generally speaking, first of all, when fitting the roof tent: To be able to fit a roof tent, you must first determine the roof load of your car.
This can usually be found in the vehicle manufacturer’s operating instructions.
Once you have selected a roof tent model, it usually weighs around 50 – 80 kg, depending on the size and material.
When buying, you should definitely pay attention to the weight, as you have to match this to the roof load of your car.
Now you need suitable roof racks for mounting your roof tent.
Mounting directly on the roof rails is not recommended, as the distance to the roof is very small and the U-bolts can cause scratches.
The roof racks must therefore initially be attached to the railing in the rack so that the roof tent can be slid onto them.
Most roof tent models have at least two rails at the bottom of the tent.
These are then used to simply slide the tent onto the roof racks already attached to the car and secure it.

Instructions: Installing the roof tent

When choosing a suitable roof tent, you should therefore first check how high the roof load of your car is and match this with the weight of your desired roof tent.
This is how you proceed when mounting the tent on the roof:

  • Determine the roof load of your car
  • Check the weight of the desired roof tent
  • Coordinate roof load and weight
  • Mounting the roof rack on the car roof
  • Slide the matching roof tent onto the brackets and attach it

Roof tent assembly without railing

If roof racks can be mounted on the roof, nothing else stands in the way of a vacation with a roof tent.
However, if your car does not have railings, attaching roof racks and crossbars is a little more difficult.
But even this is not impossible and you can look forward to a vacation with a roof tent.
In principle, the only difficulty is attaching the roof bars, which are actually mounted on the railing.
If this is not available, additional vehicle-specific brackets, a mounting kit and suitable carrier feet are required.
The brackets are connected to the feet, whereby a rubber attachment ensures that there are no scratches on the car.
Depending on the car model, there may be a separate attachment point for the load carrier feet on the edge of the car.
It may be necessary to remove a rubber strip under which the attachment points are located.
The cross struts / roof bars can now be attached here together with the carrier feet, making sure that they are centered and aligned straight.
This is how the installation works without a railing on the car:

  • Connecting the roof rack with carrier feet
  • Depending on the car model, remove the rubber strip
  • Fix the bracket to the attachment point
  • Attach the roof rack straight and centered
  • Tighten the screw connection firmly
  • Reattach the rubber strip

Material and processing.
The tent fabric of our trailer tents is made from a high-quality, 450 g blended fabric, also known as canvas. This unique combination of cotton and polyester combines the advantages of a natural fiber with those of a modern high-tech material. The result is a robust, breathable fabric that impresses with its pleasant feel and high dimensional stability.

The tent fabric, which is also used by the military, is impregnated and particularly tear-resistant thanks to the ripstop process. In this special weaving technique, thicker threads are woven into the fabric at intervals of around 10-15 millimetres, giving the fabric its characteristic tiled structure and exceptional tear resistance. It goes without saying that our fabrics are opaque and therefore offer optimum protection and privacy.
The basis of our trailer tents is a robust stainless steel frame with a thickness of 3×3 cm. A 1.8 cm thick, water-resistant wooden floor panel is securely fastened to this sturdy frame with stainless steel screws. The frame of the trailer tents is also made of galvanized steel tubing and special stainless steel components that ensure maximum stability. The modern surface finish not only offers a high level of corrosion protection, but also gives the material a pleasant feel and ensures a durable, weatherproof construction.
We rely exclusively on yarn from the German market leader Amann. Thanks to the combination of a cotton core and a high-tenacity polyester core, this yarn is characterized by a particularly high tensile strength and excellent water resistance.

On contact with water, the cotton coating swells and closes the seam holes created during sewing. For additional protection, all seams in the roof area are fitted with a transparent sealing strip to ensure maximum waterproofness.
Less is sometimes more.
We are often asked: What about the water column? For tent fabrics, the impermeability of the fabric is specified in the form of the water column. For cotton tents, this value is usually around 300 to 400 mm. However, our tent fabric offers an exceptionally high water column for cotton fabric of around 750 mm. This means that theoretically more than 75 cm of water can stand on the material before the first drops penetrate.

A major advantage of cotton as a natural raw material is its ability to swell when it gets damp, which provides additional waterproofing. In contrast, synthetic fabrics, which cannot swell, must have a much higher water column (between 3,000 and 10,000 mm, depending on the material) in order to achieve comparable waterproofness.
