Learn to skateboard – Standing on a skateboard and letting the wind blow through your hair, what more could you want?
Skating is a sport for young and old and, with a little practice, provides you with a fast means of transportation.
It’s also small and handy, so you can take it with you on trips to larger cities such as Bremen or Munich.
It is also a good tool for camping vacations because you can take it with you directly from the campsite.
To make sure there is enough space in the trunk for a skateboard, you can also consider a roof tent or a tent trailer.

Nose, tail, start?
– Overview of the skateboard
When buying a skateboard, it can help to look for larger wheels for more stability and a longer board for more control.
It is best to seek advice on this at a specialist shop.
The front part of the skateboard is called the nose, the rear part the tail.
However, as both sides technically look the same on the board, your stance determines which side is front or back.
To get a first feel, you can carefully roll back and forth on the board.
You can try out both legs and see whether the left or right foot feels more stable for you at the front.
Here is the skateboard again at a glance:
- Larger castors for stability
- Longer board for more control
- Front end: Nose
- Rear end: Tail
- Your stance decides where the front and back are
- Preliminary exercise: Carefully roll back and forth
Driving: Swing, curves & skate course
The best way to stand properly on the board is to place one foot on the front bolts and push off the ground with the back foot.
This will give you momentum.
You can then place this foot on the back of the board.
After the first few meters of riding, you can then brake again with this same foot by dragging it along the ground.
Once you’ve got going, you can master turns by leaning towards your toes or heels.
Of course, this depends on which direction you want to ride in.
It is therefore important to try out a lot at the beginning to see what works best for you.
Professional help from a skate instructor in a skate course is often recommended.
There you will learn everything step by step on the spot and can also ask questions.
The basics are summarized here:
- One foot on the front screws & push off with the other foot
- For more speed: push off faster
- Curves with pressure on toes or heel
- Braking: let the rear foot drag along & practise early
Protective equipment: it’s worth it!
You may fall more often, especially during your first attempts, which is why protective clothing is very important.
As with inline skating or rollerblading, you can use hand, elbow and knee pads and a helmet.
It is also worth buying skate shoes with reinforced soles.
This is helpful because otherwise the soles of your shoes won’t wear down and break too quickly when you’re picking up momentum and braking.
Another tip is to regularly check your skateboard for damage or have it checked and clean the wheels.
As a rule, this should prevent accidents and more serious falls due to material failure.
You should pay attention to this with your equipment:
- Protective clothing (helmet + pads (knee/hand/elbow))
- Skate shoes (reinforced soles)
- Check material
- Clean rollers
