Steps – The steps or step stools are a great convenience for your caravan or car with roof tent.
Whether foldable, fixed or self-built – they not only make it easier to get in and out, but also help to keep things tidy.
Camping in the forest with your shoes in the mud and wet leaves leaves unsightly marks.
A step stool with a matching doormat saves you time and nerves.
What’s more, you don’t have to worry if you already have little space in your motorhome.
There are foldable, small and extendable models.

Camping Ratgeber:
Model: Folding or permanently mounted
Do you want to get steps for your caravan?
The right model varies depending on the size, extension and budget.
If you want to save space, steps with one step or foldable versions are suitable.
These are usually small, easy to stow away and compact.
Every centimeter counts in the caravan, and with the small packing dimensions of the steps, you have enough space for more important things.
The double step is particularly suitable for caravans with a high entrance.
The two steps make it easy to get in and out of the caravan and prevent you from falling out of the door in the morning.
The mounted access step requires screwing and drilling into the caravan or motorhome. It is more complex and expensive, but it can be extended and retracted electrically.
- Step with one step (takes up little space, simple & compact)
- Double step (suitable for high access, two steps allow easy boarding)
- Mounting access step (electrically retractable and extendable, complex assembly)
- Folding step (saves a lot of space, suitable for small caravans)
Material: plastic, aluminum or wood
Most boarding aids are made of aluminum or plastic; it is important to ensure that they have non-slip rubber end caps.
These then ensure a firm and secure footing in snow and rain.
If that’s not enough, you’ll definitely enjoy the step stool with matching doormat.
You also have the added advantage of not bringing in dirt from outside.
Save yourself the time for cleaning and use it better with family and friends around the campfire.
- Plastic
- Aluminum
- Wood
DIY!
Build your own steps
Camping brings people together, just like working, screwing and building together.
You can build the steps yourself in just a few steps.
It is important that they are stable and strong enough to hold a grown man.
There are no limits to your creativity.
You can build a small step yourself from two Euro pallets that you screw together.
You only need the following tools:
- Drill driver
- Drill
You should first gather your materials step by step.
One suggestion would be 4 x 6cm slats for the body and 28mm thick Douglas fir floorboards for the tread.
Spruce wood with a thickness of approx. 20mm is suitable for the side parts.
You can vary the exact size according to your wishes, in our example we have decided on the dimensions 60 x30x60cm (WxHxD).
The individual step height is approx. 15 cm.
It is important to note that you should not skimp on the substructure of the steps.
Then the end result will be stable enough.
All the wood in the body should be dowelled, while the Douglas fir wood of the treads can be screwed.
You will need the following material for your DIY steps:
- Slats, 4 x 6cm
- Douglas fir 28mm each
- Spruce boards, 20 mm thick
- Two feet made of 20 mm thick wood
- Screws
- Wood glue
