Working and traveling at the same time?
If you want to discover more of the world than you can fit into a vacation, a workation could be just the thing for you: Sitting on the beach in Portugal or Rügen while you continue to work remotely?
Why not!
Camping Ratgeber:
Workation: Work the way that suits you
Workation is a format that combines work and relaxation in a place that is unusual for you.
This could be a trip to another city or country, during which you continue to work. The basic idea of a workation is to break through the daily grind and organize work and leisure time in such a way that the workflow is not affected, but at the same time there is time for new encounters in the most beautiful places on earth.
This is especially possible if you can work remotely.
The great thing about a workation is that if you work all day but are sitting on the other side of the world and can go for a walk on the beach in the evening, your free time after work quickly turns into a real vacation.
Structure your day in a way that suits you and your job: Work half a day and use the other half for yourself.
Or work full days and rest in the evenings and at weekends.
How you divide up your job and free time will of course depend on how committed you want to remain to your work and your team, how you are able to adjust your own schedule and how you have coordinated with the management.
Workation in the group: how it works
Alone or in a group: Workation is also possible with like-minded people.
In the end, it is important that you can continue with your work plans.
You should therefore never plan a workation with friends who are on vacation and don’t have to work at all.
Motivating yourself to work when everyone else is enjoying their free time is difficult and, in the worst case, puts you under constant pressure.
Your workation can last a few days and be combined with a city trip, or it can last a few weeks and give you the opportunity to discover a distant country.
If it takes a long time to get to the workation location, it makes sense to stay there longer.
Since you don’t have to take vacation for the entire time, you can easily stay on site for three to four weeks or even longer.
Tips for designing your workplace
As a camper, it is also possible to organize your next trip as a workation.
After all, working in nature can clear your head and increase your productivity.
However, it is particularly important to set up your workstation away from home or an office so that it is suitable for working for several hours at a time.
These tips will help you set up your workspace at the campsite so that you can work easily during your workation.
- Comfortable workplace: You also need suitable furniture for working outdoors. A chair that you can sit on comfortably and a sturdy table are usually best so that you have enough space for your laptop and can sit comfortably while working. If you are traveling further afield, you can store foldable camping furniture in your car to save space.
- Shade: So that the sun doesn’t bother you while you’re working, find a workplace in the shade. That way, no bright light falls on your laptop screen and you won’t be dazzled. It will also make it easier for you to keep a cool head and stay focused.
- Charging and internet: Make sure that you have the opportunity to charge your devices at your campsite and that a fast and stable internet connection is available. If you want to be on the safe side, take a portable charging station or a power bank with you. It is also better to find out in advance how good the internet connection is on site. If in doubt, you can order a larger data volume from your mobile phone provider in advance in case there are problems with the Wi-Fi at the campsite.
- Insect repellent: In the warmer months of the year, especially near bodies of water, annoying insects can be out and about and distract you from your work. Insect repellents give you the peace of mind you need to get on with your job. These can be sprays for the skin, suitable clothing, candles or even incense spirals.
