Pickup camper and hardtop for roof tents

For many, a roof tent was the entry point. A pickup camper is the next step. Instead of just sleeping, you live. Instead of climbing onto the roof, you step into a cabin. And instead of packing everything away every time, you press a button. But a purchase like this comes with more questions than a roof box: “Can my pickup carry it?”, “Will it fit my bed?”, “What if I need the bed fully again?” One by one.

Fit: What does my bed need to have?

Three measurements decide: the length of the bed, the width between the side walls, and your vehicle’s payload. For the Wingman X, that means more than 1,500 mm length and more than 1,400 mm width. The Trunk comes in two sizes because the right version mainly depends on the width of your bed.

What matters in practice: double-cab vehicles have shorter beds than single-cab models, and dimensions and mounting points change between generations of the same model. That’s why we work with vehicle-specific adapters. One call clarifies in five minutes which version fits your pickup.

Installation: Do I have to drill into my vehicle?

No. All three systems are mounted without drilling. The setup sits on the bed via an adapter system—no holes, no permanent modifications. That has two benefits for you: your pickup’s value is preserved, and you can remove the setup again. With the optional support system—electric if you want—you set the complete system down, drive out from under it, and put it back on later. With the Wingman X, refitting takes around 30 minutes.

Setup: How long until I’m inside?

As long as it takes you to press a button and watch. All three systems extend electrically, controlled by remote; with Wingman X and Trunk also via app. The Trunk takes around three minutes—about one minute for the first level and two for the second. Because both levels can be controlled independently, you can raise only the lower one if you’re just taking a break.

And if the power fails? Both campers have an emergency control. Using a separate emergency cable and an external 12 V source, you can still raise and lower electrically. The Wingman X also has a hand crank for both levels. So you won’t be stuck at the roadside with a half-extended cabin.

The bed: Does it stay usable?

Yes—and that’s where these systems differ from classic campers. No component protrudes into the bed. Tools, bikes, building materials, fishing gear: everything keeps its place. With the WinTopper, you even gain something, because the raised platform forms a roof over the bed so you can work underneath in the dry.

Two levels: What’s below, what’s above?

Below is the living area, directly on the bed. With the Wingman X, you have 1.5 m interior height there in independent lift mode; with the Trunk, 1.4 m. And when you open the panel to the upper level on the Trunk, headroom grows to up to 2.45 m. The Wingman X also includes a pegboard and a folding table downstairs.

Up top is for sleeping. With the Wingman X, under a fixed hard shell with a real pop-up roof hatch measuring 69 x 63 cm; the upper level supports up to 260 kg. With the Trunk, the upper level is up to three meters long, has eleven windows all around, and becomes an open veranda when needed. Both levels are connected inside—no need to go outside at night to get upstairs.

The protected space nobody thinks about

A side effect that becomes the main argument on the road: when the lower level rises in seconds, you get a private, opaque space right on the bed. For changing after swimming, for changing a baby, and—with a portable toilet—as a private washroom at a rest stop with no facilities. Anyone traveling with kids or away from campsites uses it more often than you’d think. With the WinTopper, it works the same way under the raised platform.

Weather protection, materials and safety

The living and sleeping areas are completely waterproof. With the Wingman X, the tent fabric is 190 g polycotton with PU coating and a 2,000 mm water column. The setup itself has a six-layer protective coating: waterproof, non-slip, abrasion-resistant, corrosion-resistant, flame-retardant, and impact- and burst-resistant.

Plus four layers of safety protection for the lifting process: instant shut-off at the push of a button, safety lock on ladder and partition wall, double anti-pinch protection on both lift systems, and audible alerts during lifting.

Lighting, power and audio

Lighting and power are integrated in all three systems. The Wingman X has a modular, two-layer lighting system that switches between magnetic, handheld and hanging modes, with multiple lighting moods. The WinTopper uses a magnetic lighting system. With the Trunk, the lighting is indirect: central light rails shine to the sides and illuminate the roof lining.

Power comes from an integrated battery, charged via the pickup’s 12 V socket or via a power station; the included charger accepts 100 to 240 V. On the Trunk, the main battery is 86.4 Wh and is sufficient for normal raising and lowering.

Audio is included everywhere. Trunk and WinTopper come with a 4.0 system at 86 dB. With the Wingman X, there’s the Symphony Class equipment option with premium audio: 6.0 channels in two layers, 32 precision drivers, 111 W output, frequency response from 50 Hz to 20 kHz, Bluetooth 5.0.
